Chapter Twelve

Thomas and Pearl left a perplexed team behind as they turned onto the highway. Apart from knowing he had to leave and go south, he had no answers to their questions. Tip and Damali pulled him aside before leaving to ask if Jesse or Taylor had caused of his sudden departure. Once he assured them their pairs had nothing to do with his getting away for a while, they tried to question him further. But he slipped away. His indecision and lack of answer sent the team into a tailspin.

Initially, Pearl said no to his invitation to join him. Even though he didn’t insist, her change of heart 15 minutes later didn’t surprise him. They both needed space to breathe.

Pearl slouched in the passenger seat, sighed and closed her eyes. “All I want is peace and for whatever’s disturbing my rest to be over.”

Understanding, he nodded, but remained silent.

“How do you feel being the only un-paired male?”

“Doesn’t bother me. I’m used to it. Having someone share my home and life would be different. Something I’d need to adjust to. You?”

“It’s weird. Like I said, I’m happy for Tip and Damali, but also sad. It’s like the end of an era. Everything’s changing. Sarita, Bella, Renee, and Jackie are pregnant and we won’t be a part of it. Never thought that’d happen.”

“Life is about change.”

“Everyone except Victoria and Jacques moved from the compound and into their new homes. Asia, Danielle, Shyla, and Rose are planning house-warmings and cookouts at their homes. That’s a first for all of them.”

“It’ll be good having Hawke closer,” Thomas said.

“Yeah. Asia as a neighbor is epic.”

“I’m sure La Patron will be happy to have his mate all to himself.”

Pearl stared out the window. “Yeah. I’m sure he will.”

Once they cleared the state line, Pearl asked. “How far south?”

Thomas shook his head. “Far as Georgia. I’m flying in the blind here. It’s innate. Pulling me, but I’m not sure what or who or why?” He wouldn’t share what La Patron told him with anyone. But if it was true, Thomas wanted to be closer to help, just in case.

“Sometimes I hear humming. Grief. Sadness and bursts of happiness, but it’s weird. Can’t explain it.” She inhaled. “I think it’s my pair. He or she’s not happy. Why pair me with someone who isn’t happy? Or with problems?” She looked at him.

“I’m the last person to ask that question. I don’t know how it works. But I’ll say this. Other than the humans from the castle and a few from the military, that’s it. They can’t create more. The re-animating shot no longer works. So if you’re paired with someone, it’s a blessing because of the limited supply.” He’d been told himself that since La Patron shared the information.

“What? The shot doesn’t work? What about—“

“The re-animation shot. Soldiers sign up for a program to take a shot when they die. It reanimates some of them.”

“Why would anyone do that?”

“Live longer. Patriotic duty. Take your pick. It worked for the Olympians we met and fought.
